Hervey Bay Whale Watching
Hervey Bay is known as the "Whale Watching Capital of the World" for good reason. The waters surrounding Hervey Bay and Fraser Island are teeming with marine life. Gentle dugong and turtles, graceful stingrays and playful dolphins abound. And every year from late July to early November, they are joined by the mighty humpback whales. Embark on a whale-watching trip and enjoy the magic of the humpback whales as they frolic in their aquatic playground in the warm calm waters of Platypus Bay.
During their time in the Bay the calves will learn and practice protective behaviour such as tail slapping and breaching and will develop a protective layer of blubber so they can follow their mothers through the South Pacific and Southern Oceans to their ultimate destination on an epic journey of some 5,000 kilometres. The migration typically takes place in two phases with pods of juveniles and mating adults the first to arrive early in the season, followed by pods of mothers and calves towards the end of the season, usually accompanied by a male. Whale watching trips can be booked from all our Beachfront Caravan Parks. Contact the resident managers for details. The spectacle of these majestic and powerful creatures provides magical moments you'll remember for the rest of your life. |
